red carpet から想像できることは？

red carpet は、文字通り「赤いじゅうたん」ですが、特別なお客様をお迎えする時に、赤いじゅうたんを通路に敷いてお迎えするシーンを映画・報道・その他で見たことはありませんでしょうか。

よって、roll out the red carpet と言うと、「丁重にお迎えする」という意味になります。roll は、「転がす」という意味ですが、roll out にすると、外へ（out)転がすことになるので、「（巻いているものを）広げる」という意味になります。

roll out the red carpet は、巻いてある赤いカーペットをコロコロ広げてお客様をお迎えする準備をしている様子を思い浮かべていただけると、意味が明確になると思います。もちろん、この言葉を使う時に、red carpetを実際に敷く必要はありません（持っていたらスゴイですね）。
