beat around the bush とは？

beat は、打つ、bush は、やぶ。
直訳すると、「やぶの周りを棒でたたく」。

元々は狩りと関係しているようですが、やぶの周りを叩いても獲物は出てきません。そこから、「遠回しに言う、はっきり言わない、問題点を避ける」という意味になります。

イギリス英語では、beat about the bush になります。

例）
Stop beating around the bush and just tell us what you think about this project.
(遠回しに言うのはやめて、このプロジェクトに対してどう思っているのか言ってください）
