by all meansとは？

この表現は、単語を見ただけでは意味が想像しにくいです。

いつもの通り、Longmanの英英辞典の定義を見てみます。

[by all means] (spoken) used to mean ‘of course’ when politely allowing someone to do something or agreeing with a suggestion
（’of course’を意味する時に使う、誰かが何かをするのを丁寧に許可する時に、または、提案に同意する時に）

例）The Free Dictionaryより
A: Can you come to dinner tomorrow?
B: By all means. I’d love to.

A：明日のディナーに来られますか。
B:もちろんですとも。喜んで。

meansを使った、表現で一緒に覚えて起きたのが、by no means、not by any means

■by no means / not by any means 決して～でない
(= not at all)

It is by no means certain that he’ll come.
(彼が来ることは決して確実ではない）

(=It’s not by any means certain that he’ll come.)
その他、by any means 「(疑問文で）何がなんでも、どうにかして」、by means of「 (手段）～によって」の表現があります。

meansには「手段」という意味があることも押さえておきましょう。
