about とapproximatelyの違い

どちらも、副詞で「おおよそ、約」という意味になるのですが、ニュアンスに微妙な違いがあります。

いつもの通り、Longmanの英英辞典で定義を比較してみます。

[about](spoken) a little more or less than a particular number, amount, or size [= roughly]:
（特定の数、量、サイズより少し多いか少ないか、(=roughly)）

approximatelyの方は、approximateという形容詞の方で定義が載っているので、形容詞の定義を引用します。

[approximate]an approximate number, amount, or time is close to the exact number, amount etc, but could be a little bit more or less than it
(approximateな数、量、時間は、正確な数や量などに近いが、その数より少しだけ多いか少ないことがあるだろう）

つまり、approximatelyの方が、exact number（正確な数字）の近くであることが分かります。

同辞書から例文を２つ引用します。

例）
＊I live about 10 miles away.
（私は約１０マイル離れた所に住んでいます）

＊The plane will be landing in approximately 20 minutes.
（その飛行機は、約２０分で着陸します）

上の例文は、だいたい１０マイルくらいと漠然と言っているのに対し、下の例文は、正確な２０分という具体的な数字（正確な数字）を意識して、「約」と表現しています。

approximatelyは、計算された数量と一緒に使われることになります。

例）
National Guard Fast FactsというCNNのページに次のような表記があります。
＊Approximately 100 Ohio National Guardsmen （約100人のオハイオ州の州兵）
＊approximately 362,000 troops（約362,000人の軍隊）
