英語で1と書くかoneと書くか？

oneと英語で書くことをspell out（スペルアウト）と言います。

数字（numerals)で書くかスペルアウトするかというガイドラインが英語にはあります。

代表的は本は、Chicago Manual of Styleというかなり分厚い本になるでしょう。

今回は、以下のサイトの説明を参考にして、簡単に纏めてみます。

こういったガイドラインは、あくまでも目安なので、例外は沢山あります。迷った時にこういう知識があると役に立つでしょう。

■スペルアウトする場合：
・１０未満の場合
・文の最初の場合
・分数（fractions)の場合は、分母と分子をハイフンで繋ぐ。
　ただし、1 1/2（1+1/2の意味）のような場合は、数字で書きます（文の先頭になる場合は除く）
・時間に、o’clockが付く場合

つまり、three people, one-third, three o’clock のような書き方をします。

■数字で表現する場合：
・１０以上の数字
・日付や年
・パーセント
・少数
・時間

つまり、100 people, July 27,2013, 0.11 inches, 3 p.m., 3:00 p.m.

また、日付に、ordinal numbers（序数: 1st, 2nd, 3rdなど）は使わないようです。つまり、July 1st, 2013 という表記は、正しくないということになります。

■お金
お金は、どちらの場合もあるようですが、大きな金額（複雑な表記の金額）の場合は、数字で書くようです。

twenty dollars (少額の場合はスペルアウト）
two million dollars or 2 million dollars（どちらでもOK)
$1,234,567（高額の場合）

英文の中で数字を見かけたら、どちらの表記になっているか意識してみてください。
