wake-up callのもう一つの意味とは？ (復習記事：再掲載／増補版）

モーニングコール（和製英語）を英語にすると、wake-up callになるというのは、旅行の英語や和製英語の本でよく見かけます。

しかし、wake-up callには、もう一つの意味があります。

Longmanの英英辞典では、以下のように定義されています。
an experience or event that shocks you and makes you realize that you must do something to change a situation:
（経験や出来事であり、ショックを与えたり、状況を変えないといけないと認識させるもの）

例）merriam-webster learner’s dictionaryより
＊His diagnosis of cancer was a wake-up call to all of us about the dangers of smoking.

（彼の癌という診断は、我々に喫煙の危険性を認識させた）

wake-up callは、朝起こしてもらるという意味から、人生に対して目覚めさせる警告にも使われるというのが面白いですね。

ついでに、wakeを使った熟語を一つ紹介します。

（干ばつの後には、飢餓が続いた）

in the wake of は、よく見かけるので覚えておきましょう。

■wake
wakeには、「（人や物た通った）跡」という意味があるので、in the wake ofの表現が生まれています。

例）ジーニアス英和辞典より
・the wake of the tornado
（竜巻が通った跡）

また、wakeには、「通夜」という意味もあります。
ただし、日本の「通夜」の感覚とは若干違うようです（英和辞典では「通夜」と訳されていますが）。
